Impeachment of the Governor

The Lake County Young Republicans held their event tonight at Austins Steak House with music, good food, conversation and laughter.

The main event was hearing from State Rep. Ed Sullivan Jr., Rep. Suzie Bassi, Rep. Sandy Cole, State Sen. Dan Duffy and Sen. Matt Murphy talk about the impeachment of the Governor.

The State Reps. explained the reasons for the House to impeach the Governor. Sullivan and Bassi both explained in no uncertain terms that his misconduct was known to anyone that cared to look since the start of his first term in office. Sullivan went on to tell us that the Democrats rallied around Rod and supported him for his reelection knowing this. It was their support and the large amounts of money he spent, that got him elected again. The Republican Party had a sub par candidate and little money. What was worse, the once loyal Republican voters stayed home on Election Day. The Republican Party did not due good service to the citizens of Illinois that year.

State Senators Duffy and Murphy could not talk about the details of the impeachment since they have become members of the jury. Sen. Murphy did say that the Governor has complained about the rules of impeachment. The State Senate took the same rules that Congress used for President Clinton and Clinton was found not guilty. The trial will start this Monday and they guessed it might take 10 days to finish. If the Governor does not participate it could take less time.

They took questions from the audience and a student from Mundelien High School asked why the State Legislature did not hold an election for the U.S. Senate seat. Bassi and Sullivan explained that Speaker Madigan prevented a vote because he was afraid that Congressman Mark Kirk would win the election. Other questions were mostly about how our state due to this Governor and aided by the Democratic controlled Legislature is unable to pay its bills. The Democratic Party will have to explain the corruption and the over spending in state government to the people in 2010.

It was fantastic to see a room filled with young people that wanted to do something about the corruption in the state that is driving out business and jobs from the state. The Young Republicans of Lake County are off to a great start.
