Guest speaker President Theodore Roosevelt (Joe Wiegand in character). Rough Rider buffet lunch catered by Chuck’s Southern Comfort CafĂ©: pulled pork, beef brisket, smoked chicken, BBQ chicken wings, hot links, BBQ rib tips, Baby Back ribs, coleslaw, potato salad, Cajun green beans, baked beans, Brunswick stew, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, and birthday cake.
With the assassination of President McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt at age 42 became the youngest President in our Nation's history. He was a hero of the Spanish-American War, leading the Rough Rider Regiment on a charge at the battle of San Juan. From his experiences driving cattle and hunting big game in the Badlands of Dakota Territory, Roosevelt gained a great appreciation for wilderness conservation and greatly expanded the National Park system. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for mediating the Russo-Japanese War in 1905 and initiated the building of the Panama Canal. Following an assassination attempt Roosevelt stated “No man has had a happier life than I have led, a happier life in every way."
